Eligibility

Which diesels need a smog check in California

Two numbers decide it: the model year and the weight rating on your door jamb sticker.

You need a Smog Check if

  • The vehicle is a 1998 or newer model year, and
  • Its GVWR is 14,000 lbs or less — that’s the gross vehicle weight rating printed on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb, not what the truck weighs today

That covers most diesel pickups, vans, and work trucks on the road in Kings County — Ram 2500 and 3500, Ford F-250 and F-350, Chevy and GMC 2500HD and 3500HD, Sprinters, and similar.

You don’t

  • 1997 and older diesels are outside the Smog Check program.
  • Over 14,000 lbs GVWR falls under CARB’s Clean Truck Check instead, which is a separate state program we don’t administer.

Not sure which side of the line you’re on? Read the GVWR off your door sticker, then call (559) 583-6023. Thirty seconds on the phone beats driving a truck across town for nothing.

Before you come in

What to bring

  • Check engine light off. A lit light is an automatic fail on any vehicle, diesel included.
  • Your DMV renewal notice, if you have one — it tells us whether the vehicle was directed to a particular station type.
  • A warm engine. If you’ve got a few miles to drive before you arrive, drive them.
  • Card or cash. We take both.

Diesel inspections take a little longer than a gas test, so leave a bit more time than you would for a car. Walk-ins are still welcome — no appointment needed.

If it fails

You get one retest within 30 days of the original smog. Retest pricing goes by model year, not fuel: $10 for 2000 and newer, $15 for a 1998 or 1999. We’re test-only, so we can’t do the repair — but we’ll hand you a report your mechanic can work straight off. How retests work →

Questions

Quick answers

$48 total — the $39.75 diesel test plus the $8.25 state certificate fee.

Do all diesel trucks need a smog check in California?

No. The Smog Check program covers 1998 and newer diesels with a GVWR of 14,000 lbs or less. Older or heavier vehicles are handled differently.

My truck is over 14,000 lbs GVWR. Can you test it?

That weight class falls under CARB’s Clean Truck Check, which is a separate program. Call us and we’ll tell you where to go instead of wasting your trip.
