Retest pricing is set by the vehicle’s model year, not its fuel type.

Testing time is charged for every inspection, including a fail or an inspection that cannot be completed. After 30 days it is a full-price smog again, not a retest.
From failed test to passing certificate
1. Nothing was issued yet
A smog certificate is only printed when a vehicle passes. Your failed test didn’t produce one, which also means you haven’t paid the $8.25 state certificate fee yet. You’ll pay it once — when you pass.
2. Get the problem repaired
We are a test-only station. By law we can inspect your vehicle but we cannot repair it. That rule exists to protect you: a shop that can’t sell you repairs has no reason to fail your car. Take the failed report to any licensed repair shop — we’ll tell you exactly what the vehicle failed on so you can hand it straight to your mechanic.
3. Come back within 30 days
Same vehicle, same station, inside the 30-day window. That’s what gets you the retest price. Miss the window and it’s a full smog check again.
4. Pass, and we transmit it for you
When it passes, the certificate prints and the result goes to the state electronically, so the DMV sees it without you doing anything. That’s when the $8.25 is added.
Don’t waste the trip
Three things send people home without a result. All three are avoidable.
The check engine light has to be off. If it’s lit when you pull in, the vehicle fails again. No exceptions — it’s an automatic fail in the state program.
Drive it before you bring it. Repairs and battery disconnects reset your vehicle’s onboard monitors. Until those monitors finish running, the vehicle reports “not ready” and can’t be certified. Most vehicles need roughly 50–100 miles of mixed city and highway driving to get there.

If the repairs are more than you can cover
California runs a Consumer Assistance Program through the Bureau of Automotive Repair that may help pay for smog-related repairs, or pay you to retire the vehicle, if you qualify. Apply before you pay for repairs — details are at bar.ca.gov. We don’t administer the program, but we’ll point you at it rather than watch you skip a repair you need.

How long do I have to come back for the retest price?
Thirty days from the date of your original smog test, at the same station. After that it’s a full-price smog check.
Can you repair what failed?
No. We’re a test-only station, so we’re not allowed to repair the vehicles we inspect. We’ll show you exactly what failed so any licensed repair shop can take it from there.
Do I pay the $8.25 certificate twice?
No. The certificate fee is a state fee charged only when a vehicle passes. A failed test never issued one.
What if it fails the retest too?
Testing time is charged for each inspection. Call us and we’ll walk you through what the report is actually showing before you spend money on the wrong repair.
My check engine light came back on. Should I still come in?
No — it will fail. Get the light diagnosed and cleared first, then drive the vehicle to let the monitors reset.
