Motorhome, cargo box — or neither
Not everything with “RV” on the title needs a smog check. The engine is what decides it.
These get smog checked
- Motorhomes — Class A, Class B, and Class C, built on their own motorized chassis
- Cargo box and box-body vehicles — box trucks, step vans, and similar
These don’t
- Travel trailers and fifth wheels. They have no engine, so there’s nothing to test. Only the vehicle towing it needs a smog check, at its own regular price.
Why it costs more than a car
Straight answer: it’s a bigger job. Access to the engine is worse, the equipment hookup takes longer, and the vehicle has to be positioned in the bay before anything starts. The price reflects the time it actually takes, not the size of the vehicle for its own sake.

Make the one trip count
- Check engine light off. Lit light, automatic fail — same rule as any other vehicle.
- Drive it warm. A motorhome that’s been parked for a season tests worse than one that’s been driven. If it’s been sitting, put some miles on it first.
- Bring your DMV renewal notice if you have it.
- Give yourself time. This isn’t a fifteen-minute in-and-out.
